Myocardial infarction risk is increased by periodontal pathobionts: a cross-sectional study - Scientific Reports
To establish the role of periodontal pathobionts as a risk factor for myocardial infarction, we examined the contribution of five periodontal pathobionts and their virulence genesβ expressions to myocardial injury (Troponin-I) and coronary artery disease burden (SYNTAX-I scores) using hierarchical linear regression. Pathobiont loads in subgingival-plaques and intra-coronary-thrombi were compared. Troponin-I release increased with one 16S rRNA gene copy/ng DNA of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Ξ²β=β6.8βΓβ10β6, 95% CIβ=β1.1βΓβ10β7β2.1βΓβ10β5), one-fold increased expressions of fimA (Ξ²β=β14.3, 95% CIβ=β1.5β27.1), bioF-3 (Ξ²β=β7.8, 95% CIβ=β1.1β12.3), prtH (Ξ²β=β1107.8, 95% CIβ=β235.6β2451.3), prtP (Ξ²β=β6772.8, 95% CIβ=β2418.7β11,126.9), ltxA (Ξ²β=β1811.8, 95% CIβ=β217.1β3840.8), cdtB (Ξ²β=β568.3, 95% CIβ=β113.4β1250.1), all pβ<β0.05. SYNTAX-I score increased with one 16S rRNA gene copy/ng DNA of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Ξ²β=β3.8βΓβ10β9, 95% CIβ=β3.6βΓβ10β10-1.8βΓβ10β8), one-fold increased expressions of fimA (Ξ²β=β1.2, 95% CIβ=β1.1β2.1), bioF-3 (Ξ²β=β1.1, 95% CIβ=β1β5.2), prtP (Ξ²β=β3, 95% CIβ=β1.3β4.6), ltxA (Ξ²β=β1.5, 95% CIβ=β1.2β2.5), all pβ<β0.05. Within-subject Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia from intra-coronary-thrombi and subgingival-plaques correlated (rhoβ=β0.6, pβ<β0.05). Higher pathobiont load and/or upregulated virulence are risk factors for myocardial infarction. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04719026.
