Porch Patrol is on duty 🐾🌄

Four Yorkies, one Appalachian yard, and absolutely everything to investigate. Sunbeams, fallen leaves, mysterious squirrels, and important smells all require immediate attention. Not to mention pee breaks. Patrol routes have been established, perimeters checked, and morale is high. Zac (17), Auggie Doggie (8), The Baby Sharks: Buzz and Gracie (1).

Appalachian security system: small, fluffy, fearless. On the look out for Cali and Smoky Cats and something to bark at. ✅

There’s something special about rainy days in the #Appalachians. It brings a quiet within you if you let it. The small world around you stops spinning and begs you to take a break.🌧️🍂


People and wildlife seek shelter while the sound of the drops tapping on the new tin roof, the smell of wet earth and pine, and the way the mist rolls across the ridges and down in the hollers brings October to a close. It feels like time slows down here.

The Yorkies curl up on the porch beside me, watching the world go by as puddles form in the gravel. Not much activity for them while on Porch Patrol duty today. Even Cali the cat has sought refuge from the rain.

The only thing to do is to embrace the quietness with a warm cup of tea in hand. And suddenly the whole mountain feels like it’s breathing with you. ☕🐾⛰️

🪵✨ In Georgia, everybody knows what “Love Shack” means because of the song, but, oh, it's more than just a song, it’s a whole mood. Around here, it’s about porch sittin’, #moonshine sipping, heart-to-hearts, and turning a place into somewhere that love feels at home.

This 105 year old #Appalachian mountain bungalow is slowly becoming our Love Shack. I think it's time to start focusing on the future and make our family's stamp on the place. History still lives here under the roof but so does our own dreams and serenity. From uneven floors to comfy sofas to a place filled with #Yorkies, laughter, and family. Every corner is being filled with our stories.

This little #mountain bungalow's #roof has weathered decades of #Appalachian seasons. 🌧️🍂 The chimney still stands proudly, but it and the roof itself tells a story of age and wear, every patch and shingle holding years of history. Protecting and covering generations of previous families from the elements.

Three years ago, inspectors rated the roof a 2 out of 10 for stability and condition. We bought the bungalow with this roof and hoping to make it until next Spring. No can do. The new addition we built from an existing open porch has exposed the deep dark secret of this roof: leaks. The chimney, the dormer, and the shingles are all coming down.

Next week, we turn the page (great song by Bob Seger). A new chapter begins with a fresh navy blue tin roof which is a nod to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the USMC. It will be a crown as strong as the mountains that surround it. 💙 The deep blue will shine against the sky, echo the ridges in the distance, and carry this bungalow forward for decades more because, usually, a tin roof doesn't need replaced.

I can not wait until I hear the sound of rain on the tin, the gleam of sunlight on new metal, and the peace of knowing the leaks are fixed. 🏡✨

🔍🐾 **BREAKING NEWS from the Porch Patrol:** Operation *Find Calli the Calico* is officially underway. 💼🕵️‍♀️

These two highly trained Yorkie agents have taken their positions on the vintage trunk command center. One’s scanning the treeline, the other’s on squirrel duty (they get easily distracted). 🐿️👀

Calli has vanished once again into the mysterious wilds of our Appalachian bungalow yard, no doubt up to something shady and extremely cat-like. Probably judging us from a tree. Or napping in the one sunbeam she found. 😼☀️

Meanwhile, the Yorkies, Grace and Buzz, remain vigilant. Alert. Clueless. But very, *very* cute.

When your porch roof is not more “patch job” than permanent fix... 🪜💸

The roofers came by today to do a temp fix on the #roof so the #carpenter can finish building the 3rd bedroom and 2nd bathroom. Patch is great. Discussion wasn't. A new #roof is required before #winter.

Out here in Appalachia, in the #Appalachian Rain Forest, we don’t just deal with weather, we battle it. Storms roll through, time wears things down, and next thing you know, you’re climbing a ladder just to stop a drip from becoming a downpour inside. 😩

The dream? A pretty blue tin roof that sings in the rain and doesn’t leak during it. 💙🌧️ But good roofs don’t come cheap and let’s be real, neither do materials, labor, or time these days.

Until then, it’s patch spray, prayer, and a whole lotta hope holding things together. 🛠️🙏
