📺 NEW VIDEO - Catch up on our #CPCCGWebinar with Joseph Harrison from the University of Salford.

Joseph discussed a key finding in #migrant health research: although foreign‑born #populations often live longer, they may spend more of those extra years in poorer health. Using #Swedish #administrativedata, Joseph examines which major causes of #death show this paradox, offering a clearer picture by relying on objective patient records rather than self‑reported #health: https://youtu.be/CiBkLxADtrk?si=T7jiicfhJfI2XZvV

#Save #Endangered #Sharks and the #EndangeredSpeciesAct
As a wildlife conservationist and waterman who has spent most of my life on the #ocean, I have had the #privilege to #witness the #miraculous #recovery of the Brown Pelican, the Humpback Whale in Hawai'i, and the Gray Whale #populations in my home waters of #California. These majestic creatures, once on the brink of #extinction, have rebounded, thanks in large part to the protections afforded by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). However, the introduction of #ESA Amendments Act of 2025 poses a grave threat to this landmark legislation and the species it #safeguards.

First Nations continue call to save Mactaquac salmon facility
The Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick is continuing to advocate for the Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced earlier this year that the facility will close in the fall, a move some conservationists say could threaten salmon populations.

Paul Ehrlich predicted disaster from overpopulation, but today the challenge is declining fertility, with governments in Asia and Europe seeking ways to boost births and maintain economic and social stability. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2026/03/29/world/paul-ehrlichs-population-predictions/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #paulehrlich #demographics #populations #humanrace
Paul Ehrlich's 'Population Bomb' never went off but did great harm

This isn't the world that Ehrlich, who died on March 13, envisaged when he published 'The Population Bomb' in 1968

"Such #fish #migrations happen in #rivers across the world - #salmon & #eels are more familiar examples - but many are rapidly collapsing, according to the most comprehensive assessment to date. The analysis, by the UN’s convention on the conservation of migratory species (CMS)... found #freshwater fish #populations #worldwide have crashed by about 81% since 1970."

"Kuang argues that the focus needs to shift entirely: away from trying to fix #ageing #populations demographically, toward dealing with its challenges directly"

CPC-CG member Dr Bernice Kuang contributes to 'The baby letter', an article examining France’s new '#demographicrearmament' plan, which includes sending letters to all 29‑year‑olds urging them to think about #fertility alongside broader #reproductivehealth measures: https://thegloriousletter.com/the-baby-letter/

The baby letter

You’re 29 years old. A letter arrives. It’s from your government, and it reminds you that you won’t be fertile forever, and if you want to have children, you should start thinking about it now.

📝 In every issue of Changing Populations, we share a #PhD journey from one of our members. This time, Shu Li, a PhD student in the Department of #SocialStatistics and #Demography, University of Southampton, gives us insight into her research career.

Her #doctoral project focuses on ‘#Socialmedia and #fertility behaviour among the #reproductive-age group: Evidence from #China’.
