A Good Git-Together Review by Scott Yanow

On various tracks, Jon Hendricks' first album as a leader, released in 1959, features such major sidemen as altoist Pony Poindexter, guitarist Wes Montgomery, and both Nat and Cannonball Adderley. Hendricks -- who was riding high in Lambert, Hendricks & Ross at the time -- is in superb form on such numbers as "I'm Gonna Shout (Everything Started in the House of the Lord)," a couple of songs that Hendricks had written for Louis Jordan, Randy Weston's "Pretty Strange," "Social Call," and the jubilant "A Good Git-Together."

Gumbo! is an album by saxophonists Pony Poindexter and Booker Ervin which was released on the Prestige label in 1963.

Al Campbell of Allmusic stated: "Tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin joined alto and soprano saxophonist Pony Poindexter in 1963 on Gumbo, based around the sights and sounds of Poindexter's birthplace, the Crescent City. Poindexter penned the majority of these compositions, providing them with evocative titles of the city". - Wikipedia

Pony's Express is the debut album by saxophonist Pony Poindexter which was released on the Epic label in 1962.

Pony's Express Review by Ken Dryden

Pony Poindexter was a sporadically recorded bop saxophonist who played on sessions by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross as well as Wes Montgomery; his long unavailable 1962 debut as a leader, originally on Epic ...With arrangements by Gene Kee, Poindexter leads several all-star ensembles, which include Phil Woods, Gene Quill, Sonny Red, Eric Dolphy, Dexter Gordon, Clifford Jordan, Jimmy Heath, Sal Nistico, Billy Mitchell, and Pepper Adams...the loping blues "Lanyop," which also features a typically daredevil alto solo by Dolphy.."

The second LP I have listened to today featuring a jazz saxophonist dressed as a cowboy on a horse, and Dexter Gordon who was the other jazz cat, also plays here.
