I'm trying to reduce nitrates in my #Koi #Pond

There's only one water lily left and the fish have chewed through the leaf stems. 😕

This morning I bought them a new water lily plant. I've not put it in the pond yet.

I also bought them 5 bunches of Elodia. I dropped one weighted bunch in at lunchtime.

I've just checked 3 hours later. The weight is a few inches away, there is no Elodia, and the fish are all waiting in that area for their next feed!

Koi are so greedy!

Nesting Pied- Billed Grebe: The grebe parents were working hard on the nest even though it was already filled with eggs. This behaviour seemed so odd to me, so I did some reading. Because the grebes create a floating platform on which to nest, the weight of the eggs makes the platform begin to sink. To prevent the eggs from going underwater, the grebe parents are constantly finding new vegetation to put under the nest to keep the platform above water level. Both parents will leave the nest as needed to work on the platform, but the eggs stay warm because the decaying vegetable matter gives off heat, acting like a mechanical incubator. Here's a bee about to land on a yellow water lily.
The lily, Nuphar lutea, apparently smells like the dregs of wine.
