The SM41 locomotive, Railway Museum, Kościerzyna, Poland

Diesel locomotives of the SM41 series appeared on the tracks of the Polish State Railways (PKP) in 1961. These locomotives were imported from Hungary, manufactured in the Budapest Ganz-Mavag plant, and were designated the DVM-2 type. A total of 264 units were delivered to PKP. Locomotives of this series were also found in large numbers on the sidings of larger industrial plants, where over 100 units were delivered by 1971.

The SM41 are vehicles designed mainly for shunting work, but in the 1960s they were the basis for the development of diesel traction. They could also be found in passenger train service, where they supplemented the work of engine cars, and in winter they drove passenger trains composed of cars equipped with individual heating.

In the years 1988-1994 almost 80% of the locomotives were scrapped, in the following years several units went under the burner each year. The last locomotive SM41-111 was withdrawn from service in 2000.
