When I do Know Your Rights trainings, I make sure to emphasize that rights are corrective, not preventive.

One of my co-trainers referred to it as "rights are for the courts".

Having rights in no way stops cops from violating those rights and the track record of Toronto Police in the Black community is, uh, less than stellar.

They don't have to worry as the Self-Investigation Unit will generally clear them, and even if they don't, the "punishment" is trivial and a long way off.
