Oddly, the tree leaves haven't started turning here yet. But the goldenrod and pokeweed offer some pretty autumn color in their place.

A pigeon is perched on the pokeweed branch. Either the pigeon is very light or the pokeweed branch is strong—or both. I’ve only seen small birds perch on pokeweed until today.

The delicate flowers of American Pokeweed or Pigeonberry (Phytolacca americana) All parts of the plant are poisonous for humans but the young greens can be eaten if boiled in several changes of water. In the American south this is called "Poke Sallet".

The flowers are followed by deep purplish red berries.

#pokeweed update

each plant took 2-3 sessions of digging to get at the roots.

This was taken at end of day #1 digging up the larger plant. For scale the main tap root is just the first 6 inches but had smaller roots going out several feet! Trying to find time in between rainstorms…

Pokeweed or Pigeon-berry (Phytolacca americana). These berries will turn a purplish black color when ripe. The pigeon berry moniker refers to this being a staple food of the now extinct passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), which was once the most populous bird species on Earth.
