I first heard this song as a student, on lonely evenings away from home, in the version of Chet Baker “with 50 Italian strings”, and what got to my heart then was the trumpet solo, that seemed to come from far away in time and space and conveyed so much love and longing.

When I wrote “The Days They Meet at Midnight” I thought of a river close to my home and the water that is flowing there quietly and constantly throughout the year. The seasons change, from early spring to the time when first leaves and then snow are falling, the river doesn’t care. It also never freezes, snowflakes might fall into it and dissolve quickly downstream.
