"The ambassador takes a bite of her fish. It rolls across her tongue, rich and sweet with the barest hint of salt. It is not the flavor that she savors. She can feel the burst of energy from it almost immediately, can feel her mind sharpening with every bite. Her butcher has done well."

Beneath Ceaseless Skies

From the Archives: "Out of Draconia" by Alma Alexander, BCS #436, who has a new story & podcast in BCS #456.

"until the day she came back into the village, at dawn, staggering, thin to the point of being gaunt, her hair hacked by her own hand so that it hung in lank strands to just below her shoulders, her eyes hollowed out... but blazing. And cradled across her body in a makeshift sling... was a dragon egg."

Beneath Ceaseless Skies - Out of Draconia by Alma Alexander

She was gone for a long time—so long, in fact, that I began to come to terms with the possibility that she would never return, and to regret my urging for her to go out there and seek her dragon-egg fortune. Right until the day she came back into the village, at dawn, staggering, thin to the point of being gaunt, her hair hacked by her own hand so that it hung in lank strands to just below her shoulders, her eyes hollowed out... but blazing. And cradled across her body in a makeshift sling... was a dragon egg.

Live in BCS #451 Science-Fantasy Month 8 and podcast BCS 358: "Hollow in The Hope" by @aimeeogden ; podcast guest-narrated by @tinaconnolly .

"Sel stares at the imprint. She stares back—unblinking, unmoved, unalive—until Sel can’t bear the silence provoked by this stubborn algorithm for a moment longer. They roll away. “Hopeless,” they say. “I don’t even dare hope for a better father.”"

Beneath Ceaseless Skies - Hollow in The Hope by Aimee Ogden

For whatever time they have left, they will have to make their own companionship. They should use those hours wisely, and not in seeking counsel—or worse, comfort—from a woman long dead. “I accept the warning,” Sel says. They need someone to talk to. Someone who might understand. “Proceed.”

Live in BCS #448 and podcast BCS 357: "Sing" by Jules Bly,

"Sing. Sing the world into being. Every action, every object, in the past and the present and the future, is in the song. As long as these events are known and described by the song of all things, they will continue to exist. The song is carried by one voice at a time. Right now, it is your voice. Do not stop singing. If your voice fails, the world vanishes."

As we near year's end, a look back at BCS stories of 2025!

"The Crow's Second Tale" by @MarissaLingen , BCS #445 and podcast BCS 354.

"So Kiris knew, even at the age of five: no one should only know one story. Not even a crow, like in the song. And if she was the only one who had spotted the problem, she felt down to her five-year-old bones that she would have to be the one to fix it."

Live in BCS #432 & podcast BCS 347 (guest-narrated by @SummerFletcher ): "Unbeaten" by @GraceSeybold .

"“Let me teach you revolution,” I begged them, each new boy or girl who plied the ox-goad as my metal blade drew our furrows in the field. They listened eagerly enough to my stories, then grew into adults who cowered and simpered in public, and complained in private, and did nothing."
