This day is dedicated to raising awareness about pneumonia—an inflammatory lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi—that severely affects breathing and can be fatal, especially in children and the elderly.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
- Pneumonia causes 1.4 million child deaths annually (WHO).
- Every 39 seconds, a child dies from pneumonia (UNICEF).
- It is preventable and treatable through vaccination, good nutrition, and timely medical care.
- COVID-19 pandemic worsened respiratory infections, emphasizing the need for global action.
𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀
- The main bacterial causes: *Streptococcus pneumoniae* and *Haemophilus influenzae* type b (Hib).
- Viral pneumonia is often caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
- Air pollution and smoking increase pneumonia risk.

✅ Vaccinate against pneumococcus and influenza.
✅ Practice good hand hygiene.
