_The Evening Post_, 12 August 1924:
MATERNAL MORTALITY
WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE TRUTH ?
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—As a registered maternity nurse of Iong standing, I shall be glad if you will kindly let me reply to a portion of Dr. Campbell Begg’s letter….
I am not concerned about “The Medical Association and its critics,” but … I am much interested in the attempt which is being made by the
#Health Department and The
#Plunket Society to do away with the quite unnecessary dangers to mother and child which are recognised and admitted to exist.
… What we women are frightened about is not merely the things that are being said about the Dominion losing two mothers a week who ought not to die, and allowing many more mothers and many babies who do not actually die to be injured, but the fact that it is so—that so many painful and avoidable deaths and serious injuries are actually taking place all the time in our midst, and that the doctors as a body do not seem willing to face these facts.
…
Let us all decide to play our individual parts honestly, wholeheartedly, and to the best of our ability…—l am, etc.,
