@Strypey So Pleroma and Akkoma (which, for some reason, is missing from the list) actually use the ActivityPub C2S API to connect their frontends? Even though Pleroma predates ActivityPub and started out as an alternative GNU social frontend, much like Mastodon?

I mean, they're famous for having separate repositories for the server and the Web frontend (same name with "-FE" attached). And they're equally famous for having servers that forgo the official frontend in favour of third-party stuff, most notably Mangane.

So if Mangane actually makes use of that API rather than a homebrew *oma client API, it could be used as or, if need be, modified into a sparrings partner for API-testing purposes, not to mention that it's living proof that the API actually works. As it integrates with Pleroma and Akkoma that well, I've got my doubts that it only uses the Mastodon client API.

In the cases of (streams) and Forte which are almost the same software save for protocol support, the Web UI is much closer to the server backend, as flexible and modifyable it is. In their cases, the question would be whether they could be used to test just how far feature support in the ActivityPub C2S API can possibly go, maybe even whether it'd be possible to use the ActivityPub C2S API to build an almost fully-featured (streams)/Forte client app (except, of course, Web UI configuration and (streams)' per-channel ActivityPub switch which might cut the whole app off the server).

For a potential Pleroma-FE development, I'm wondering if a multiline image description has issues with screen reader? Any other thing I should be aware of?

There is this discussion here and I'm considering picking it up. So I'm looking for information about that before starting and choosing a solution

The ticket I might pick-up

There is no reason a user should not be able to enter alternative text as multiple lines, while it does not impact screen readers either way, for those...

@aliceif This is also why I find the western Misskey forks' desire to pander to mobile users by trying to function with existing Mastodon Clients so counterproductive - the Mastodon Clients often just don't care. They really only are for Mastodon and everything else is "good luck have fun".
Or rather, "Wait, you exist?!"

And IIRC, Misskey has its own client API. Aria seems to be the shooting star mobile app for the *keys.

Frontless servers to me are a bad idea, as things stand - despite the appeal in speeding up initial development.
In this regard, Pleroma and Akkoma are the best of both worlds. Headless server, own client API, respective official frontend has its own repository, but you may install third-party frontends instead. And Mangane is actually (also) built against the *omas. "Akkomane" is a thing.

I have a question about Akkoma Frontend:

Is there a way to change which emoji reaction I use by default (similar to a feature in Sharkey)? I want to use a purple heart as my reaction 99% of the time.

What I don't like about Pleroma-FE is that I can't expand a post just by clicking on the content. I'm having to click on the timestamp to expand a post and see all comments.

It sure would be nice if Pleroma hid replies in lists… at least like 80% of what I see there are people I know having conversations I have nothing to add to with people I don’t know; it can make the lists a tad tedious to use.

Just played with #PleromaFE frontend and changed the look of this instance a little ... more to come.
