The #Merritt Island National #Wildlife #Refuge was established after NASA decided it didn’t need all of #MerrittIsland, which had been acquired by the government in anticipation of the need for enormous infrastructure needed for the Apollo program, which anticipated 4 launchpads for the Saturn C-8/Nova launch vehicle, which would have used 8 F-1 engines on the first stage.
Eventually, NASA would decide to scale back to the 5-engine Saturn V, and only ended up building two pads.
NASA gave the part of the island they didn’t need to the Department of the Interior, which created wildlife refuges and public beaches like #Playalinda #Beach, where two #willets are looking for food.

#Playalinda #Beach is a destination for many #beachgoesrs, even when there isn’t a #launch.
An elevated deck area was provided for users to be able to sit down and eat at, or rest in the shade.
It also provides a great view of the beach, #framed by its timbers.

#Playalinda #Beach is a great place for #recreation, including #swimming, #surfing, #fishing, hanging out on the beach, #birding, #hiking, and more.
Playalinda Beach is inside #CapeCanaveral National #Seashore and next to the #MerrittIsland National #Wildlife Refuge, and many species of #birds and other animals are native or migrating through at any time.
These #Pelicans are year-round residents.

#Playalinda #beach is perfect for #photographing #rocket launches, especially #AtlasV or #Falcon9 #launches.
There are multiple parking lots and boardwalk access to the #beach from Cape Canaveral National Seashore. From there, it is about a mile’s hike to the fence between #CCNS and #KSC / Kennedy Space Center. After the #launch (or #scrub), it’s another mile back to the boardwalk, on sand, carrying #photography gear.
But the launch is often worth it (few places you can *feel* the #sound of the engines), and sometimes the #view on the way back, looking over #MerrittIsland and #MINWR, is worth it too.
