Repair Cafe @Hitchin Hackspace

A Repair Café is an event in which expert repairer volunteers repair small appliances/devices with the person bringing the item along. We will therefore expect you to stay for the duration of the attempted repair and you might get to learn a thing or two about repairs ;) Hitchin Repair Café is run entirely by local volunteers. We do not charge for the repairs but you are welcome to leave a donation. Our aim is to reduce waste and save as many items from landfill as possible. We hold 3 Repair Cafe a year. Oftentimes with the #RepairCafe events it is the stories we learn of that really makes all worthwhile... We just got this from Jen of #PlasticFreeHitchin who organise the Repair Cafe events we host:
"I wanted to share with you the conclusion of a lovely story that started yesterday (as some of you will know) with Pat (83 years old) who came to the repair cafe with two cameras placed in hedgehog boxes in her garden. Both were broken and her and her husband (she is a full time carer for him after he suffered a stroke) used to enjoy watching the hedgehogs in their garden. A number of you spent (a long time) attempting to repair the cameras yesterday and we weren't' sure if they would work. Given how long it took, I offered to bring the cameras back to Pat today (turns out they live in Clifton!!). When I got there, we plugged the two cameras and connected them to her phone and............both are working 🥳 ... 1/2

We have had something of a hiatus with our #RepairCafe events run by #PlasticFreeHitchin and hosted at the #Hackspace. This was because of insurance issues... All sorted now. As there was a bit of a repair backlog our first event was invite only and held last Saturday with no pre publicity.

We had 23 items come to our "mini" repair cafe and a success rate (items either repaired or advised on how to repair) of 80%.

Hopefully we will be arranging another event very soon.

Our hackspace has invested in a wide selection of "security" bits, spudgers, plectrums, dental picks, hand modified screwdrivers and the like. They all live in our "Right to Repair" Really Useful Box which is available to members and sees a lot of use when we host the #PlasticFreeHitchin #RepairCafe events.

It can be very frustrating when a manufacturer tries to prevent economic repair but, conversely, hugely rewarding when you get in and fix it anyway!
