One more small friend from this morning: a male house finch contemplating the overnight snow.
There are three recognized subspecies of the common grackle: the Florida grackle, the purple grackle, and the bronzed grackle.
Here's one of the locals showing off why you might call a bird "bronzed"—and also maybe "purple", come to that.
This isn't my *best* photo of the day, but I think it's the funniest. Male grackles like to puff up to nearly twice their normal size before giving a certain kind of call, and here I managed to catch one just as he started deflating. 😂
Today's small friends are a house finch and a blue jay. ❤️ 💙

Beware, beware, the Dragonborn robin comes.
Today's small friends are a coy northern mockingbird with cold feet and an American goldfinch who refuses to let a possible source of food go unexplored.
Today's small friends are a downy woodpecker, six of the seven American goldfinches who've been visiting today, and a male house finch.
Today's small friends include:
- A male downy woodpecker who looks like he would make an excellent dart
- A European starling looking magisterial while getting photobombed by a red-bellied woodpecker
- An American robin getting a warm drink
- Some American goldfinches
