Travelling well into Cornwall this evening to give a presentation on the Pinwill sisters and their amazing woodcarving to Probus Historic Cornwall Society.

I've got plenty to tell them about Pinwill work in their area and there's no doubt I'll have much to learn from them too.

Thrilled to see a paper I've been working on for a long time finally published. It provides much of the context for the Pinwill sisters in terms of the architectural milieu from which they emerged.

Weare, Somerset

Superb carving on the choir stalls at St Gregory's church by the three Pinwill sisters, Mary, Ethel and Violet, to the naturalistic designs of architect Edmund H. Sedding, as part of a general restoration in 1905. Image taken during a recent first time visit, a thrilling experience.

Crantock Cornwall
Choir stall bench end bracket carved by the Pinwill sisters and designed by Edmund H Sedding 1899-1902 as part of an extensive restoration. All the bench ends depict subjects from the natural world; here a bramble and a spider in her web. Such innovative designs helped establish the Pinwills as one of the leading ecclesistical woodcarving companies in the Westcountry.

The #PinwillSisters, Mary, Ethel and Violet, worked as professional woodcarvers in Ermington #Devon and then Plymouth from about 1890. They were three of seven daughters of the Revd Edmund Pinwill and his wife Elizabeth, who encouraged their daughters to learn woodcarving. The sisters went on to set up their own company, Rashleigh, Pinwill & Co. While it was not unusual for women to learn to carve in the late Victorian period, it was quite extraordinary for them to set up in business. πŸ“Έ : my own
Common practice among carvers like the #PinwillSisters was to first make clay models (maquettes) from which to produce figures such as these at Lew Trenchard #Devon of St Petrock, St Peter and St Michael. This made it easier to produce an accurate figure. πŸ“Έ : my own #Woodcarving
