Ho di nuovo cambiato distro di Linux. Sebbene l'idea di un Debian già pronto per giocare sia carina, non mi ha convinto, e più di una volta ho rischiato di disinstallare il mio intero ambiente desktop perché volevo togliere qualcosa che non mi serviva 😅

Alla fine, per via della faccenda dell'arch user repository, ho deciso di passare a PikaOS (che per chi non lo conoscesse, è Debian per il gaming).

Mi ha incuriosito il fatto che un sacco di gente ne parla bene, ma considerando che parte con tipo 2300 pacchetti una volta installato, non so quanto sarà resistente nel lungo termine...

So I guess I have to finally actually do something about #Bazzite being on my computer. Which is too bad; It's worked really well.

Now I just need to figure out where to go from here. #PikaOS is a good option. Solid tooling, Debian Unstable base rolling, and a fun, kinda goofy but very helpful community.

#CachyOS is also nice, and the btrfs snapsots integrated into the system out of the box are even nicer. I'm super comfortable on Arch, but setting it up for gaming from scratch is more trouble than I wanna put in, so Cachy is a solid option.

Let's see, what else... Hardware support isn't an issue (carefully selected, AMD, etc.), so I guess anything. I need good gaming support, not based on #Fedora or #Ubuntu, and obviously #Windows can go fuck itself. #Mint is awesome but not in the cards (I bounce off of Cinnamon, sadly).

Any suggestions?

Yet again, I have tried a new OS on my Laptop on the Side: PikaOS, the Niri edition which basically needs zero configuration outside of changing a few things. As the creator was kind enough to include a settings menu that basically allows the user to make useful changes without ever touching a config file. I like that for the time being. PikaOS is based on Debian which means I can use .deb packages and install packages conventionally.

I really like how it flows right out of the box. It's fairly polished, however, the login greeter will duplicate some of my keyboard inputs. It's not the worst issue out of the gate and it could be fixed. I tipped them a coffee as a way of thanks for a decent experience. I'll probably install another distro on this thing now. I wanted to trial run it.

However, I am still on the hunt for a Systemd free OS that doesn't side with that deranged Xlibre dev. I looked at KaOS, given the packages were slim. It wasn't right for me.

I’ve been running Linux off and on for years. But with a break from any meaningful experimentation since I bought my Steam Deck, I decided it was time for something new.

So I did the cliché thing and bought a used Thinkpad on eBay to install Linux on. Here’s my initial experience, with some backstory about my journey until now.
