TL;DR: old woman shouts at cloud - frustration with the surprise that tech gadget works for more than a week.

I get kind of sad when see those articles and videos about 20 year old
#tech, where people are surprised that it still works.

Yes, stuff can go bad and things fail but a lot of tech in this home is way older and works a treat.

I get that I am getting old and that it's time to tell people about how things were in the beginning of the Internet and when personal technology exploded (figuratively. I am looking at you Canon and Samsung. Don't do that ever again).

But I also think that while planned obsolescence is in every other reddit post about Mainboards failing we should look at how fast technology has moved, how many devices we still own that fascinated us but are utterly useless and how much
#ewaste we are creating by moving on so quickly.

I am very torn about this. I can't in good conscience blame a manufacturer for making their device only last a few years and buy a new phone every other year.

On the other side tech is moving much more slowly than companies would like us to believe. There is a game changer every half decade or so in microchip design or a shift to a new technology... I am telling this to myself more than anyone else: I don't NEED a new device every other year. I don't want to be surprised that my 2002 Pontis MP3 Player still works a treat.

Still I enjoy installing firmware updates on light bulbs like a mad girl and experiment with new technology. I love to tinker.

And also I love to keep things running, repair, refurbish, restore. I got a stack of laptops here that are from different eras starting with the late 90s and none of them has problems significant enough to throw them out. Most of them (starting at around 2010) even run modern OSes fine and can be used.

I am fine with daily driving a 15 year old
#notebook but I also want to see ffmpeg go whoosh on a modern 16core CPU.

Weird times.

Grab your soldering iron and breathe some new life into an old circuit. It's fun - in a fun way. You know?
❤️

Also: happy pride

Today I participated on a locally organised trail run. I only did the 5k with 150m positive height gain, which was quite nice. Cutest thing though were the hand made medals from local slate (Schiefer) 😍
