Five stars:

The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, George Hauman and Doris Hauman (Illustrators) (1930) is the version of the story I grew up with. It's about a Depression Era steam train packed full of food and toys for needy children breaking down just outside of town and needing rescue from another engine. Most refuse save for another, even older steam engine that is willing to try.

The richness and complexity of Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” (1963)

Tomorrow morning, I'll be teaching a class on "Where the Wild Things Are", the 1963 picture book by Maurice Sendak (1928-2012). Having prepared it now, I'm thrilled at the book's richness and complexity. I knew it as a child, of course, and I read it to my own children, too,

Four stars:

Dinosaur Comes to Town by Gene Darby and Art Seiden (Illustrator) (1963) is what it says on the tin. A dinosaur comes to a town to do something.

From the cover we can see it's an upright dinosaur, meaning probably a predator. Art Seiden drew the creature in the posture previously given to T-rex type dinosaurs before the connection to modern day birds was made. It's also drawn to be kaiju sized bringing to mind Godzilla or similar.

Five stars:

Lena the Chicken by Linda Bailey and K-Fai Steele (Illustrator) (2025) is a review book I was offered via LibraryThing back in October. For whatever reason, the publisher waited until March to send me a copy (well after getting scolded by LibraryThing for not reviewing it in a timely manner). So here we are, now finally reviewing it.

The book's subtitle is But really a dinosaur. It's about how brave, feisty, and territorial Lena is. She sees herself as more t-rex than chicken and loves to make herself and her opinions known.
