“Blue Lou” by the Sullivan Fortner Trio with Tyrone Allen II and Kayvon Gordon, Atlantis, Basel, 2 March 2026

For me, the highlight of tonight's Offbeat Jazz concert by pianist Sullivan Fortner’s trio with bassist Tyrone Allen II and drummer Kayvon Gordon was their performance of “Blue Lou”, a 1934 composition by Edgar Sampson (who also wrote “Stompin’ at the Savoy” in 1933) that Fortner and his bandmates

New# review today: "It is an unfortunate quirk of fate or timing that only now are we covering a release by #KrisDavis under her own name. Her 2019 album Diatom Ribbons is exceptional and should be in the collection of anyone who likes boundary-pushing jazz. Run the Gauntlet sees her leading a trio with #RobertHurst (bass) and #JohnathanBlake (drums), and there is no hint of cocktail #PianoTrio #jazz here." #ExposeOnline #AvantJazz #StringQuartet #LutosławskiQuartet http://expose.org/index.php/articles/display/kris-davis-run-the-guantlet-the-solastalgia-suite-2.html

Paul Cornish - You're Exaggerating

I was introduced to Cornish via Joshua Redman: he was part of his touring band pre-Words Fall Short, then appeared on that album, and I saw him on the subsequent tour.

So I snagged this, his new solo debut, leading a trio with Joshua Crumbly (bass) and Jonathan Pinson (drums): there's a broad spectrum of approaches here, all interesting.

Good stuff.

Three is the twenty-first studio album by Australian improvised music trio The Necks released in 2020.

Pitchfork's Colin Joyce called the album "slow, winding, and meditative" noting it was "composed almost entirely of piano, bass, and drums, and builds outwards from minimal meanderings to overgrown thickets of instrumentation".. In The Quietus Johnny Lamb concluded "It really is outstanding work on all fronts. Each track here has a distinct and complementary topography. Places to explore, spend time in, and marvel at. The Necks remain at the top of their game". JazzTimes reviewer Morgan Enos said "it proves that after tilling the same patch of creative terrain for their entire career, the Necks can still manage a late-period streak of excellence". - Wikipedia

Welcomed sleep yesterday and then greeted the new day after a swim with End Of Summer by the Espen Eriksen Trio, released on Rune Grammofon in 2020.

"After the highly successful "Perfectly Unhappy" (2018) album with Andy Sheppard, the trio is back with a new album featuring seven brand new songs from the pianist. Captivating and lyrical, always melodic and often melancholic and uplifting at the same time, these are all real tunes...

"End Of Summer" was recorded in Oslo in April during lockdown. After getting all their concerts cancelled because of the pandemic, Espen says it was very inspiring to still be able to meet in a recording studio to make new music and keep it all alive..." - Bandcamp
