Making perovskite solar cells weather-resistant

Perovskite solar cells are widely seen as the next big leap in photovoltaics.

Very nifty approach!

"Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with power-conversion efficiencies comparable to established technologies hold huge promise for becoming the future photovoltaic technology, also given their versatility, low-cost and energy-efficient fabrication processes. However, PSCs are not stable under moderate reverse bias, an unavoidable situation under real-world operation, for instance, caused by partial shading of a module or installation with PSCs connected in series. Approaches to address this issue have focused on engineering the device architecture to enhance the breakdown voltage and mitigate the detrimental effects of reverse bias2,5,6. Here we present a completely different approach that fully solves the reverse-bias issue. With our Memsol, we developed a new concept of a solar cell with an integrated memristor, which protects the solar cell and simultaneously works as a bypass element. The memristor is realized by area-selective deposition of an additional metal–insulator stack and shares the perovskite and electrodes with the solar-cell part. Reverse-bias and shading tests show that the Memsol remains stable and automatically toggles between a low-resistance bypass state and full-efficiency solar-cell operation, dependent on the illumination and bias conditions."

Dr Gilbz spells it out. The #climate scientists were a bit too conservative. #climateChange denial is strong in the US these days, but if it provides any comfort, please know many of us are still doing our best, regardless. I’m putting up more #photovoltaics this summer. Rebates be damned.

It’s always “worse than expected” 😩

☀️ Researchers from our university, together with colleagues from CSEM, have achieved a record 30% efficiency for triple-junction solar cells, which combine two thin-film perovskite cells and one silicon cell on a single device. The milestone could advance affordable next-generation solar technologies for space and terrestrial applications.

Record efficiency for perovskite-silicon triple-junction solar cells

EPFL and CSEM researchers have achieved a record 30% efficiency for triple-junction solar cells, which combine two thin-film perovskite cells and one silicon cell on a single device. The milestone could advance affordable next-generation solar technologies for space and terrestrial applications.

People fret about loss of spinning mass in generation systems, hence loss of automagical side-effect frequency control.

Here's some good news in that dept.

"This research investigates the economic viability of photovoltaic (PV) systems operating with an active power reserve to provide frequency containment reserve (FCR) services in the Netherlands. For that reason, the potential revenue of a PV system on the day-ahead (DA) market is compared to the FCR market using market price data from the period of January 1st to October 31st, 2024. Results show that there are 71 out of 304 days in which it is profitable for the considered 49.5 MWp PV system to provide FCR during the selected interval of 12:00–16:00 h. The PV system increased its revenue by €53 661 or 11.34% during these 71 days, which corresponds to a 2.87% increase compared to the total revenue earned on the DA market over the 10-month interval. Furthermore, aggregating the production of three PV plants reduces variability and increases minimum power output during the same 4-hour window. The minimum aggregated PV output power is higher than 10% of the nominal value for 85% of considered days, as opposed to 44%–53% for individual sites, while a delta power analysis shows a 22.9%–31.6% reduction in short-term variability through aggregation, demonstrating its potential to improve FCR provision viability."

The conversation with @ike led me to think about what #ClimateMitigation wedges @czds and I do:
1) #BESS a 15.4kWh battery energy storage system that allows us to time-shift our energy usage to less “dirty” grid sources and provides backup during outages
2) #photovoltaics and #windEnergy not enough to go off-grid but maybe enough to charge the BESS minimizing grid usage
3) Vegetarian for Clarise 100%, for me…I eat about 400-500g of meat/fish/poultry per month
4) Reduce travel…
