Street photography vs wildlife photography… two worlds that could not be more different. Yet last weekend I found myself switching forests for city streets as the Partij voor de Dieren campaign brought us into the center of Tilburg for the municipal elections.

Normally I walk quietly through places like Kampina or the Oisterwijkse Bossen, listening for birds and watching the movement of wildlife. Patience is everything there. Sometimes you wait half an hour for a bird to land in the right branch.

Street and event photography? That patience becomes speed.

The moment you step into a busy city center everything moves: people, cyclists, conversations, banners in the wind, sunlight bouncing off buildings. You cannot ask anyone to pause the moment. Instead, you react to it. Both cameras were set to around 1/500 second to freeze the movement, while the ISO constantly changed as volunteers stepped from bright sunlight into deep shadow between buildings.

I carried my Canon 5D Mark IV with the Sigma 100–400 and the Canon 5DsR with the Sigma 24–70 Art, switching between telephoto moments and wider street scenes while volunteers talked with people, handed out flyers, and shared conversations about animals, nature, and our shared future.

In a way, photographing people in a city is not that different from observing wildlife. Both require awareness, anticipation, and a bit of intuition about behavior. The difference is simply the habitat.

And this weekend, my forest just happened to be made of bricks and bicycles instead of trees.

A walk through Huis ter Heide & Bosrijk

A few days ago, my wife Christel and I wandered through the northern part of Huis ter Heide, bordering the Efteling Bosrijk. The air was calm, soft clouds drifted by, and sunlight occasionally broke through — just enough to paint the forest in warm tones.

While walking, I noticed a flawless Imleria badia — known as the Bay Bolete or “Kastanjeboleet” in Dutch. It stood proud among fallen leaves, its chestnut-brown cap glistening slightly from the forest’s moisture. This species plays an essential role in the ecosystem, forming symbiotic mycorrhizal bonds with trees like pines and beeches, exchanging nutrients that keep forests thriving.

Later, Christel spotted a red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), poised on a wooden fence, turning its head just as she clicked the shutter on our Canon 5D Mark IV with the Sigma 100–400mm. That curious glance over its shoulder made the shot come alive — pure serendipity.

We ended our walk at Klaas Vaak Lake, where the houses of Efteling Bosrijk mirrored perfectly in the still water. The reflections of reds, greens, and browns looked like a painter’s palette — a calm, storybook ending to a wonderful day outdoors.

边缘(the edge)

(The sun had just set, and darkness was about to engulf everything. On a nearly completed bridge, I finished photographing the sunset when I turned and saw a lone figure sitting on the curb. The streetlights and the lines on the road converged perfectly toward that single point—his position was just right. So I raised my camera and pressed the shutter. )

2/2

These people... I genuinly pity them now after years. If they didn’t understand, they’re still following the tight rules of clean, high resolution (how many megapixels?) and standardized way... striving for the most boring results. Not even knowing it can be an interesting adventure.
