Instagram just untied your grid from the calendar.

As of this week you can reorder your posts into any arrangement, regardless of when you published them. Most coverage is treating this as a small feature. For anyone who uses Instagram as a working portfolio, it is bigger than that.

It splits two things that used to be one: your timeline (when you posted) and your portfolio (the order people see). For the first time, the first impression on your profile is a deliberate choice rather than an accident of chronology.

In my latest piece I break down how to use it as both craft and business: how to sequence the first nine, how to keep tonal flow together when the work is mostly black and white, and why the grid is the top of your funnel for clients and bookings.

#photography business: California public agencies carry a 3% DVBE participation goal on state contracts. A DVBE-certified commercial photographer isn't just a vendor — they're a direct path to satisfying that requirement. Most clients don't connect those dots until you connect them. #DVBE #PublicSector #PhotographyBusiness
#photography truth: Dropbox is not a delivery strategy. A professional handoff means organized folders, logical file names, full-res and web-optimized exports, and a licensing summary. That's what saves your client's team hours — and gets you called back next time. #PhotographyBusiness #CommercialPhotography
The real cost of a reshoot: client time, rescheduled access, delayed launches, damaged trust. A solid pre-production process eliminates most of them before anyone shows up on site. #PhotographyBusiness #CommercialPhotography
Documentation photography: complete, accurate, audit-ready. Marketing photography: selective, compelling, brand-aligned. Different briefs. Different standards. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable — you end up with images that do neither job well. #ArchitecturalPhotography #PhotographyBusiness
Commercial photography licensing is underexplained and misunderstood by most buyers. "Full rights" means nothing legally. What matters: channels covered, geographic scope, duration, and whether paid media is included. I structure my agreements so clients know exactly what they're getting — standard promotional use is always included, and upgrades are clearly priced. No surprises at the campaign launch. #PhotographyBusiness #Licensing #Photography

California AB 723 is now in effect — AI-edited real estate photos require disclosure labels and the original unaltered image. Virtual staging, sky swaps, removed fixtures all covered. New York is close behind.
