Over 15 years ago, I had a photo of my mother's mother retouched. I'm sure today they can make her move and talk, but back then I thought they did a great job.

She was a vaudeville type back in the 1920's but fell in with my foreign service Grandfather when he was overseas in Latvia. I assume she was performing, because why else would a gal from New Jersey, US be in Latvia? My mom and her sister were born in Riga, Latvia, 1933 and '34.

We were always told she died from complications of a broken hip, but my step grandmother, grandpa's third wife, related, like many people, she was an opium addict.

I love that idea of her being an artist and hanging 'round the opium dens, though I'm sure the reality wasn't so rosy.
