ATP-dependent phosphofructokinase (PFK) is considered an irreversible glycolytic enzyme. This study shows that Trypanosoma brucei is the only known organism that uses PFK in the gluconeogenic direction under physiological conditions, likely due to its compartmentalization within glycosomes.
