The McPerfects and The McCarelesses...a spring tale from 2018:
On two of our outside lighting fixtures, we have birds nesting. The Phoebes are here every year (going on 30 years!) and pick one of the two spotlight boxes, raising one or two broods of little ones. So, this year a pair of Robins chose the second spotlight box.
The phoebes are neat, fast builders, no wasted material. they build in about two days and are sitting shortly after that. The McPerfects.
The Robins, on the other hand...well. Their spot is right over my steps to get in and there is a steady stream of excess building material falling all over the place. their nest is still under construction and I can see twigs and hay and string hanging out all over. I can just imagine the poop when things get going. The McCarelesses.
So goes my life in springtime.

Not the best sound, but the Phoebe's have returned. We have had a nesting pair since we built our house in 1987. They prefer to build on one of three outdoor floodlight boxes, well under the eaves. When they decide, I unscrew the bulbs so no one roasts. It's a joy to see them every spring. I don't use pesticides, so there's plenty of grub.
