First of two Mose Allison LPs out on Elektra Musician (the other was Lessons in Living) and (per the jacket notes) the 19th Mose Allison album. Allison plays Yamaha electric piano as well as traditional acoustic piano.

Allison is supported by Joe Farrell (tenor sax, flute), Phil Upchurch (guitar), Putter Smith (bass), John Dentz (drums), and Ron Powell (congas, percussion). Produced by Esmond Edwards.

Phil Upchurch, a guitarist who played with Quincy Jones, Donny Hathaway and Michael Jackson, died on Nov. 23 at 84 years old.

"You Can’t Sit Down" is a popular rhythm-and-blues instrumental turned vocal dance hit originally recorded in 1959 by The Bim Bam Boos (featuring #PhilUpchurch on guitar and Cornell Muldrow on organ). The instrumental version, often credited to the Philip Upchurch Combo, was re-recorded in New Orleans in 1960 and released in 1961, reaching No. 29 on the #Billboard pop chart. In 1963, Philadelphia vocal group #TheDovells added lyrics and released it as a single.

Tot een paar dagen terug had ik nog nooit van Phil Upchurch gehoord, ondanks zijn bijdragen aan honderden platen van onder meer en onder andere: Anita Baker, George Benson, Michael Jackson (Off The Wall), Bob Dylan (de vreselijke kerstplaat), Sheena Easton, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Donny Hathaway, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Chaka Khan, en zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan.

Dankzij Radio Paradise hoorde ik Darkness, Darkness, een cover van de hit van The Youngbloods. Een opname uit 1972 die dus al ruim 50 jaar bestaat zonder dat ik er ooit van gehoord had.
