> ‘Petrofiction’ is actually a review of the Jordanian-Saudi writer Abdelrahman Munif’s Cities of Salt which I describe as a ‘monumental five-part cycle of novels dealing with the history of oil.’ The review was published in The New Republic (2 March 1992: 29-33) and is also included in my essay collections Incendiary Circumstances (USA) and The Imam and the Indian (India).

This is a great piece on convenience culture and why the whole of North American food culture has to change before single-use plastics can be dealt with...

Recycling Is Beyond Fixing, So Let's Get Over It

From the archives, on Global Recycling Day: "It has all been a lie and a fantasy. It's time to change the culture, not the cup."

The black summer bushfires’ toll on the vets and carers helping Australian wildlife

"When the 2019-20 fires erupted Veterinarians and carers responded on the front lines. In December 2019 the sky went black in many parts of Australia. In the following weeks, unprecedented bushfires killed 33 people, destroyed thousands of homes, decimated about 3bn animals and 24m hectares of habitat...Smoke was circumventing the globe."

"The trauma doesn’t go away."

Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) is causing hotter, drier conditions and is increasing the risk of bushfires.

> Leave fossil fuels in the ground
> Stop incinerating bio-diversity
> Pay vets to treat Australian wildlife injured by bushfires and combustion engine infrastructure impacts.
> Support volunteer carers for wildlife

Season 3 Episode 8: Propaganda and Petroturfing with Dr Jordan Kinder

What is petroturfing? What is an energy imaginary? If, as Thomas King says, we are all stories, how can we make sense of which stories are leading us to an understanding of things as they are, rather than misrepresenting reality or persuading us to take a biased view? And what can we do when we learn to critically interpret the world around us? What are some concrete actions we can take as regular folks if we decide that we want to push back against this narrative of “ethical oil” and intervene in the reactionary oil culture war?

Dr Jordan Kinder has spent the last decade of his life thinking about these questions, specifically in the context of the Canadian oil industry and Alberta. The result? His new book Petroturfing: Refining Canadian Oil, which covers these topics and more, forthcoming from University of Minnesota Press in spring 2024. Join Ariel and Jordan to learn about the many competing narratives about (and even by!) Canadian oil and gas—including but not limited to being labelled dirty oil, ethical oil, one of the world’s leading polluters, an underdog industry under attack, a Canadian success story, the ball and chain around Canada’s neck as it tries to avert climate catastrophe, and the list goes on…

Solarpunk Presents

Just musing on the cavalcade of themes in this season of #PerryMason. In addition to the moody #noir pastiche aesthetic, we have a delightfully messy #lesbian romance, a pre-Zoot Suit uprising storyline about corrupt legal scapegoating of #MexicanAmericans, a complex plot about #BlackLA and its social dynamics of #class and #gender, and the #JohnGarfield-esque simmering righteous White guy and his rebellion against social pressure to be aspirational and upwardly mobile. Oh and at the heart of the crime might be #oil. Somebody should unpack all this and write about it....
