From 1944 to 1971, under Bretton Woods, countries were required to convert their currencies into $US, which was exchangeable for gold at a fixed rate of $35/oz. By 1971, US spending and inflation was soaring from Vietnam war. European countries started requesting gold in exchange, and US was running out of gold.

This is so good and as you say, topical again with all the same players and same plot line although this time the respective leaders and positions of participants are very different.
Once you understand the current US wars, attacks etc (Russia included) are all related to US trying to save the #petrodollar racket from a world transition to a #multipolar trading economy which will bankrupt USA, now essentially insolvent with a $41T debt.
We're in for some frightening times.

This paper argues that the trajectory of the U.S.–Iran war is constrained less by battlefieldcapability than by political time: elections, media-defined frames, and the durability of publicconsent. The central variable is defining power—the ability to fix the meaning of the war in afragmented information environment. The paper develops three linked claims. First, astructural conflict between the administration and established media institutions weakenscoordinated agenda-setting in wartime. Second, the reversal of diplomatic normalisation after7 October 2023 illustrates how quickly regional predictability can be undone when proxyarchitectures reintroduce high-intensity conflict. Third, the U.S. midterm cycle exerts agravitational pull towards short-term stabilisation over strategic completion, makingdefinitional power and public support decisive constraints on strategic resolve.
