Next up on my (music) reading pile: ‘Rock and Role: The Visionary Songs of Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf Generator’ by Joe Banks.
I enjoyed Banks’s book about Hawkwind, so I’m looking forward to digging into this one. I was interested to read in one of PH’s recent newsletters that he’d not been interviewed for the book - it’s unclear whether that was Hammill’s decision or the author’s…

"From The Trees" (2017) by #PeterHammill.
That raw B&W sleeve with punk style graffiti suggests towards his raw early 1980s band style, even 1970s "Nadir". But the colorful back cover and the inner sleeve makes clear this "a calm" chill out album.
Indeed musically I would place this next to "Fireships" (one of my fave "calm" albums of his). Maybe you can also hear some "Fool's Mate" stuff here, but aged like a wine.
Back from seeing Peter Hammill in concert. I first saw him play with VdGG over fifty years ago; I saw him solo over thirty years ago, too.
It was very good tonight, though his songs can be a bit bleak - and he played my favourite of his songs first, so it was downhill from there!
That was My Room. Here's what it would have sounded like at that gig in 1992...
And it was such a wonderful, intensely emotional show. He began with the Van der Graaf Generator song ‘My Room (Waiting for Wonderland)’, one of my favourites, and ended with ‘A Vision’.
Looking forward to seeing Peter Hammill at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh tonight. You never know quite what to expect from him.
