Laura Morante: “We presented *La stanza del figlio* and Nanni Moretti said to me: ‘It’s okay if I call Jasmine Trinca and not you?’ Then he declared: ‘Laura isn’t coming because she’s shy.’”

Laura Morante was a guest at the Riviera International Film Festival 2026 to present Peter Marcias’ film about Grazia Deledda, “Quasi Grazia,” followed by “La morte ci divide” by David Chavez Graz and “Lucca Mortis” by Peter Greenaway. Among the many anecdotes recounted was the one about Nanni Moretti’s “La stanza del figlio” (The Son’s Room) from 2001, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

“When I heard about the victory at Cannes through the newspapers, I wasn’t there, no one called me. – she stated – For Nanni Moretti, the Palme changed a lot, not particularly for the actors. However, to this day, it seems to me one of my most successful achievements.”

And still: “So many years have passed, I don’t know how it is now. Back then, sometimes it was affectionate, other times for nothing. When we presented ‘La stanza del figlio’ at the Nuovo Sacher, he said: ‘Do you mind if I call Jasmine Trinca and the others on stage and not you?’ I replied to do as he wished. On stage he said: ‘Laura isn’t coming on stage because she’s shy.’ And so the entire promotion ended in a silly way.” But the worst actor she worked with was “Harvey Keitel, with his ego-driven antics.”

The memory then goes to the illustrious aunt Elsa Morante: “Beyond its undeniable value as an author, I remember his difficult character. He was ruthless in his judgments, not particularly sympathetic. He had a preference for me because I was a difficult, shy child, he invited me to his home in Rome and I remember those days as a nightmare. Fortunately, I was a sleepwalker, I walked around at night, chatted, in the end he sent me home. He didn’t even understand my mother, he judged her as the petty bourgeois she wasn’t, the famous impossible characters of writers. But as a narrator, she was good.”

Poi dichiarò: ‘Laura non viene perché è timida’” comes from Il Fatto Quotidiano.

Candles for Diwali*. Today's and tomorrow's theme are virtually interchangeable.

When an old crone gives birth to a beautiful baby, a young virgin claims the child as hers. With the Immaculately Conceived wonder put on display – to the child's contemporaries, the court of Cosimo de' Medici attending a reenactment of the events, and us film viewers – He protects the false Virgin from losing her chastity and blurs the walls between staging and gospel.

* “Diwali, one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, lasting for five days from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month Ashvina to the second day of the light half of the lunar month Karttika. The corresponding dates in the Gregorian calendar usually fall in late October and November.” (source).

Watch The Draughtsman's Contract - BFI Player

Peter Greenaway became a director of international status with this witty, stylised, erotic country house murder mystery.

BFI Player

On a Rome-bound train, the architect makes love to his young wife. In Rome, he'll have 9 months to organise an exhibition about his idol, the 18th century French architect Boullée.

He feasts on green figs until a suave Italian tells a tale of how Augustus' wife fed him poisoned ones. From then on, he's plagued with belly cramps and vomiting.

He accuses his wife of trying to poison him, thus driving her away (into the arms of the suave Italian). He doesn't even notice her pregnancy.

The suffering architect becomes obsessed with the bellies of statues, replicating and enlarging endless images. He writes confessional postcards to the long-dead Boullée.

He's distracted. He's built practically nothing (just 6 1/2 buildings), and his idealistic ambition to mount a perfect exhibition is undermined by the lean sophisticated Italians handling the money.

His rival's sister literally wraps him in red tape, luring him into a compromising position. His pregnant wife leaves him, and his baby is no longer his.

He believes he doesn't have long to live. He's exiled from his dream exhibition, and postcards to the past go unanswered. His overambitious undelivered visions as an ARCHITECT matter to nobody, and he sees nowhere to go but down.

This tragic tale of flabby human downfall unfolds amid gorgeous glamour shots of immortal Roman monuments. It's beautiful to behold.

Are the creative and financial pressures faced by an outclassed American architect anything like those experienced by a parochial English filmmaker in Rome? Hmmm.
