Good Luck! I see good luck in the strangest places It’s been a solid thread in my weave. I’ve learned to expect it anywhere, anytime and nothing is too hard to believe…. sometimes in crystals sometimes in the leaves of the palm to have suitors at 80 and people still coming around…. Good luck is the pen name of Grace When Grace is shy she signs “Good Luck” When Grace is feeling playful she calls it your lucky day but it’s really Grace… coming your way. Grace is so completely undeserved… Nothing you do or don’t, will bring her or keep her away. When she feels like it, she leaves you a gift That’s how she works and Voilá… It’s your lucky day!

“If at First You Don’t Succeed…” #Comic part 7 (finale)

Lorraine might not have even mentioned all of the teams she auditioned for but Chariots of Colors and The Awks were two of them because two of the companies that Hi-Toro tried to sell the Amiga to were Apple and Silicon Graphics. I linked a source about that in the wiki article:

Her narration was going to be straightforward in the original script, but I changed it to her playing a song. It was fun to throw in 80’s glam rock visuals, and show off one of her music instruments. This part established that she has a talent for improvised musicals.

I’m glad to have finished this comic! It was a long detour from the other stories, and took longer than I hoped it would, but it was fun. There are still some leftover ideas for character interactions I might put into a written epilogue, but otherwise this story is completed 🎉

“If at First You Don’t Succeed…” #Comic part 7 #WIP

Lorraine will be on stage in the finale and she’s planning something flashy and musical as she's bringing out her keyboard guitar! This panel also shows what it looks like for a character to materialize an item from their inventory.

When I posted this update on my site, I added a placeholder in the menu for a standalone illustrations page. I needed that separate section since the illustrations I made about a couple weeks ago, and I have a few more coming up!

Woo boy! This was a romp. A surreal tale of a relative nobody who loses their job and, on the same day, is directed to go to the hospital for a skewed hypotenuse. You read that right. My second Hoban novel, they are emerging as a humorous lover of language, who never hesitates to approach a new theme or plot with wholly new stylistic modality. In this short novel, personification of the universe is taken to a maximum. Yellow paper possesses consciousness and holds dialog with our “Smalltime” eponym, the Underground makes its own decisions on when and where trains travel, Death is a chimpanzee, etc. So, with something like their playful reworking of human ‘parts’ to characteristics of abstract geometry, I never really knew if we were dealing with ‘real’ people or robots. I think they were human — at least right now — and it was intentionally absurdist to reinforce the cold clinical nature of modern life. In a brisk 200 pages, you are entertained with humorous encounters and existential musings verging on philosophical treatises. While quite light and easy to read, there are tones of nihilism in Kleinzeit’s attempt at making sense of the world. So, point of fact, that in the end, I’m not exactly sure what to conclude. As life, perhaps, should be?

Just one more part left after this!

Next up on stage for her interview is Kyouko. Her role as a musician, and her collaboration with Chariots of Colors before she joined Defending Waits for Nobody reference the Windows 95 startup sound was made on a Mac.

Getting the chance to reference that detail was years in the making since it might’ve been in 2020 when I learned about it, and wanted to incorporate it 😭 I immediately liked the idea of a portraying a Windows 95 character being friends with the Mac characters before she had to compete against them.

When Kyouko became a competitor to CC, some CC members or at least their supporters saw this as a betrayal. To her, it was nothing personal and she never had anything against them even after joining their fiercest competitor. She missed her chance to become an Operating Superstar with joining CC, but found one with DWN.

Although she has no regrets with joining DWN, competing against CC during the low point between their teams wasn’t easy for her either. She was introduced as cooperating again with CC members though in this story:

I usually don't get the chance to do anniversary drawings, but I had two ideas that came to mind and finished nearly in time for the anniversary of System 7's release! They were posted on my project site about a week ago.

During Operating Superstars Version 2, I struggled with finalizing Pleiades’ design and characterization. I also struggled with Wolfgang’s and couldn’t finalize either of them.

For Version 3, I went with Pleiades dressing in grunge-inspired fashion and that she speaks in 90's slang, and Wolfgang being a punk rocker that’s also skilled in pyrotechnics and demolition work (owing to one of the most infamous early PowerPC Macs).

I drew an homage to the early Sonic game title screens since I thought it could be funny if Pleiades also acted like the 90's mascot with attitude archetype. How ironic though since the 90’s was the peak of Mario’s and Sonic’s rivalry, and there were Mario games for the Mac from that era!

The other one of her and Wolfgang is also inspired by platforms; the black and white patterns are ones from the compact Macs, and System 7 is the last version that supports any of them.
