Nix/86 – Days 28-30 – Graphic Novel/Zine

ALT TEXT - Day 28 It's been a week - a stress-filled bullshit kind of week. I didn't think I did even one step. At least my no assist into bed streak is still going strong. KP adjusted my walker so i'll get back at it tomorrow. Sometimes you need to pause one thing to give full attention to another. We have reached a point of homeostasis of current conditions (for now).

His French business partner back then drove a Citroën. He would always raise and lower the hydraulic suspension just for me, because I loved it so much and laughed like the child I was. Maybe that’s why my father took me along to his business meetings - because I was a total car freak.

He walked away with nothing but broken ribs. Since then, he’s driven Peugeots. He says the French saved his life twice: once as a baby refugee fleeing the Nazis, and once when his BMW fit under that truck. Out of gratitude, he’s owned nothing but Peugeots ever since – though he still liked my Benz.

My husband’s musical memories and mine are worlds apart. I danced to Kiss in discos while he was analyzing Trio’s “Da Da Da” in elementary school music class. Ten years later, our worlds collided – and have been merging ever since.
My father is convinced this BMW saved his life. Years later, after our trips, the roof was shaved off by a truck he slid under.

I was allowed to park the car, and afterward I got ice cream. I can still park like a pro – driving too, of course – though for environmental reasons I’ve reduced driving to an absolute minimum. I experienced the “Neue Deutsche Welle” live as a child, in discos and at parties in Germany and France, when I really should have been doing my homework.

But there were also beautiful memories. The first song I ever danced to in a disco, at the age of eight, was “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.” My favourite song that year was “Ich will Spaß” by Markus. Sometimes we would speed along to the song in my father’s brand-new BMW 318i E30, singing at the top of our lungs.

I’m a metal girl, but I know there’s more than that. Because I was very tall as a child (1.76 m at eight years old), my father was always able to take me along on his business trips and disco tours. I had to behave impeccably and eat escargot at his business dinners without complaining. If I managed that, and even got a French sentence out, there was a reward: ice cream or chocolate mousse.
