there’s something that I love in old #shooters that seems to have been forgotten since then, and I would love to see it make a comeback: enemies that react substantially to being shot
in a shooter I ideally want an enemy to immediately “sell” the damage that they’ve taken - like how a wrestler would “sell” a punch by flinching and acting out pain. if they don’t do this it generally feels to me like my weapons are incredibly weak - like I’m just shooting red paintballs at enemies instead of actually hurting them. I want their reaction to be immediate, involve audio and animation changes, and I want it to have gameplay implications too. for example in Perfect Dark you can:
- shoot a gun out of an enemy’s hand (there’s a sound effect and they’re now disarmed)
- shoot an enemy in the leg (they make a pain noise, clutch their leg in pain, and begin limping)
- shoot an enemy in the arm (they clutch their arm in pain, make a pain noise, and have a harder time aiming)
- etc.
also in #PerfectDark, any body part that you shoot will immediately play a very simple procedural “animation” of it being blown back slightly, which helps to sell the impact of the bullet
but you don’t have to have a really elaborate bullet reaction system like that. good old #Doom does just three things:
- when you shoot an enemy, they instantly switch to a graphic of them grimacing in pain
- at the same instant, they play a pain noise, which is very satisfying because it gives you instant feedback that you’ve hit something with your shot
- and finally, they freeze in place, unable to even shoot, until their grimace animation is done
so Doom has visual and audio feedback that is instantaneous, plus it has gameplay implications (enemies are briefly stunned when you shoot them). and the mechanic of stunning enemies by shooting them actually deepens the gameplay by a lot (I could write a whole post about that, and about the other tactical elements involved in prioritizing targets in Doom. Doom has a staggering amount of depth for such a simple game. I genuinely think Doom might be the best #FPS ever made)
anyway, please bring this back! I’m so tired of shooting at enemies and having them act like being shot is nothing. it brings the whole feel of the game down by comparison
