DWP Pension Credit chaos means retirees will wait 'four years for payments'

Confusion over eligibility and how to apply make the scheme - which Martin Lewis has long criticised - one of most under-claimed benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

I spent Sunday at Mum's. Going through bank statements and savings to see if she could claim Pension Credit.

Pension Credit will give her extra money to help with her living costs as she's over State Pension age without much income.

Pension Credit is worth, on average, Β£3,900 per year and unlocks additional support including the Winter Fuel Payment, help with Council Tax, NHS dental care and a free TV licence.

Luckily she has broadband and is able to access the Government web site. https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/how-to-claim

We had to input details of what she had in her bank account and any savings, plus some other details; NI Number etc. We had to check statements to find the balances from three months ago too as they will back date payments.

Anyway, today, just three days later, she received a phone call from the Department for Work and Pensions saying the she qualifies by just a few pounds. This will unlock a lot of extra help for her!

So, I'd recommend you all help your parents and grand-parents to do likewise. Remember, lots of the older generation shun social media and are unaware of their entitlement, so make a point of calling them and raising the issue when visiting. ;)

Please boost if you in the UK.

Pension Credit

Pension Credit is extra money for pensioners to bring your weekly income up to a minimum amount - what you'll get, apply, eligibility.

"No, we wanted this to happen, we did.....but also it works better if lots of Old People forget to do it and just die during winter (boo hoo) and we save money. Because we fucking hate spending money on you, the Citizens, ....the burdens that you are.....how dare you be born!"

Martin Lewis warns there's a 'problem' with DWP benefit claimed by millions

The BBC Sounds podcast presenter, who is an ITV regular, discussed Pension Credit on Twitter/X as the government tries to ramp up take-up.

At least some of the toxic inheritance will be made up of problems of capacity and capability that cannot be tackled in the short term - though there will be temptation to do so both expensively and often ineffectively - the #newlabour approach- the famous 'third way'. There will be lobbying to do exactly that - for there would be a lot of money in it for some! Means-testing winter fuel payments may prove a fiscal 'own goal' - if the take up of #pensioncredit goes up enough..

Save the Winter Fuel Payment petition!

We believe as many as 2 million pensioners who find paying their energy bills a real stretch will be seriously hit by this cut:

- Those on low incomes who just miss out on #Pension Credit

- Those with high energy needs because of #disability or #illness

- 1 million who don’t receive #PensionCredit for which they are eligible.

Save the Winter Fuel Payment for struggling pensioners

Sign Age UK's petition. Cutting the Winter Fuel Payment this winter, with virtually no notice and no compensatory measures to protect poor and vulnerable pensioners, is the wrong policy decision.
