Hands up if you got a penpal in Primary school? I ended up with two, and I’m still in contact with them to this day! That’s around 37 years of writing to, and now messaging, each other. Another joy that children now won’t experience. #snailmail #penpals #letters #eighties #nineties

Pen pal programs endure in a digital age

A recent trip to New Zealand to visit her pen pal of 40 years made an Associated Press reporter from New Hampshire wonder about the history of programs that bring strangers together to write letters. While the program that matched them as teenagers folded years ago, others are still going strong. And even though the government postal service in Denmark recently stopped delivering letters altogether, some see signs of a letter-writing resurgence. More than 15,000 people signed up for a pen pal program created by a writer for The New Yorker during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, an app called Slowly that mimics the anticipation of receiving a letter by delaying digital message deliveries has 10 million users.

Excerpt: " 'People are very interested in physical, analog things right now,” [Rachel Syme] said. 'I think it really has an appeal especially to a younger generation who grew up with a phone glued to their hand, to do something that’s more tactile, slower, more intentional, more mindful, but also just disconnected from the internet in every way.' I am currently living a real life romance trope, I just can’t find what this trope is. For weeks now, my neighbor and I have been exchanging text files on a flash drive rather than emails, because our inboxes are flooded and a lot of people have asked us, why not just exchange email addresses, but there is something revolutionary anticipatory about receiving a knock on my door, a flash drive tucked into a bag, with some kind of fruit, shampoo, or cookie or something the other might need. What really makes my heart swoon is these aren’t short letters either, they’re lengthy! Of course we talk to each other and we see each other often around the complex, but we don’t have enough time to converse the way we write to each other. #PenPal #PenPals
I should send more letters 💌 My sister answered my letter and it was lovely 💕

I joined the Fediverse last month to escape big tech, and wow… I was NOT ready for how awesome this community is.

Hey, I’m Leo! I’m a world citizen from Brazil and I love meeting people from everywhere, especially those who are deeply obsessed with super specific things, from Furbies to geopolitics.

I usually toot in English or Portuguese, but we can also be Spanish or French pen pals. Feel free to DM me anytime!
