Camera traps capture the first images of a rare antelope in Zanzibar.

Surprising Discoveries in the Ngezi Natural Park
Conservation scientists have captured the first images of camera traps of the rare Pemba blue duiker, a small antelope that lives in one of the last remaining native forests in northern Pemba Island, Zanzibar. This species, standing only 30 centimeters (12 inches) at the shoulder, could be a subspecies of the blue duiker (Philantomba monticola) that inhabits the African continent.
Toward the end of January, approximately 20 camera traps—cameras activated by movement that automatically take pictures of passing animals—were installed in the Ngezi Natural Reserve, thanks to the work of ecologist Margherita Rinaldi and the Italian ONLUS Istituto Oikos. The researchers selected locations where experienced foresters had discovered almost invisible animal trails through the dense vegetation.
