Dresden Internet Exchange May 12

Here are some impressions from our 5th Open Tech Meetup on Thursday – our first sponsored OTM. After some initial acoustic issues (lessons were learned ;D), our program featured @chrisd who gave us an impressive introduction to the network of WOBCOM and the challenges faced when deploying whiteboxes with rtbrick. @9er discussed the planned network for BelWü and their current difficulties with procurement. Lastly, @FestplattenSchnitzel and Jonas shared practical advice on how TU Dresden handles traffic monitoring and the insights Matthias’s Research Group extracts from it.

The evening went late into the night, and it was an absolute blast to welcome so many network engineers, enthusiasts, and supporters of a healthy local Internet in Dresden.

Here come the details for the 5th Open Tech Meetup. This time, our OTM will be held at Lohrmanns Brewery, Kraftwerk Mitte, on 07.05.2026 at 6 pm. We have prepared an exciting program with speakers from across Germany, covering topics ranging from white box hardware to research networks and network measurements. Food and drinks will be provided, so join us for an amazing evening.

Die Open-Source-Community traf sich in Chemnitz und wir waren wieder dabei! In unserem Workshop haben wir Linux-Enthusiasten ins echte Internet losgelassen. Wir haben 16 AS-Nummern für unsere Teilnehmer bei der RIPE registriert. Jeder Teilnehmer hat von uns einen kleinen Linux-Router erhalten und konnte damit verschiedene Rollen (ORG, ISP, IXP) im Internet nachstellen. So konnten wir die grundlegende Funktionsweise des Internets simulieren. Es entstand ein großartiger Kabelsalat, viele BGP-Peerings und zahlreiche nette Gespräche zwischen den Teilnehmern.

Last Thursday, we held a small hackathon to prepare our micro-Internet workshop for @clt_news (CLT2026). Setting up the small Linux routers was a real blast with RouterKit, a framework for software routers currently under development. Thanks to every tasty dal from Maurice, we were able to hack late into the night. We are looking forward to CLT 2026 :)
