E, all’improvviso, ricordai: era andata come ci aveva detto il frate”.

Thailand? A Dante-esque group stage where all women and all men were for sale. From Padre Pio they said I would divorce, and it did: speaks Federico Ruffo.

Federico Ruffo, who hosts “Mi manda Raitre,” talked about his life—publicly and privately—in an interview with the weekly magazine Oggi. He admitted: “There is, however, a particular moment in my life: when my first wife, for reasons of her own, personal reasons, dragged me to San Giovanni Rotondo to visit the remains of Padre Pio.”

And he continued: “She also wanted to visit Fra Modestino, who had been very close to Padre Pio. It was said he had predictive abilities, he looked at her and told her that you and I wouldn’t stay together, which seemed crazy because we’d just gotten married. And that she would have a child from another love. I remember I was very upset. But time proved him right: we separated, she remarried, and had a beautiful child.”

“I couldn’t deny that being there was strange, something intangible. – he recounted – Then came the pain of separating, we’d been together since childhood. And, suddenly, I remembered: it had gone as the friar had said.”

Among Ruffo’s many jobs was an investigation in Thailand that sparked debate: “You ask yourself if there is a God who lives at all latitudes, if he sometimes gets distracted, if he hides. I got there by investigating the trafficking of prostitution. The entire economy of the city of Pattaya revolved around prostitution. There was nothing else. It was like a kind of Dante’s hell where all women and all men were for sale. It was never a matter of yes or no, but only of price. It’s like being on Via Veneto the day before Christmas, only there are no presents, there are prostitutes. They had put us up in a hotel that was also a brothel. So in the morning you had breakfast, then the place where you had breakfast became the place where the girls moved back and forth with a number. From the TV in your room you could watch, call, and say ‘Send me on channel 22.’”
