Up in the air: Pasadena City Council member Bianca Valerio wins coin flip to retain seat

Valerio, an incumbent, defeated challenger Bruce Leamon on Monday as a coin toss decided the race for Position B on the city council. Each received 272 votes in a June 7 runoff election.

Having exhausted all other options, the City of Pasadena will be relying on a coin flip next week to determine the winner of a city council election that ended in a tie.

Coin flip to decide Pasadena City Council race that ended in tie

Bruce Leamon and Bianca Valerio each received 272 votes in the runoff for the District B position on the city council. Using a coin flip is a rare but legal practice in Texas used to determine the outcome of a tied election.

Council member Emmanuel Guerrero created the "Guerrero Scholarship", which originally would have been worth $500 for each scholarship from his district's funds to go to two Pasadena High School students.

First up, the terms for Pasadena City Council District thrones 1, 2, 4, and 6 will expire in December 2024. There will also be a special election for the District 3 City Council throne, and the Mayoral throne is also up in December.
