Parking minimums built the sprawl we are now spending billions trying to undo.

They require spaces per unit and that shapes everything: parcel size, building separation, impervious surface, walkability. Removing minimums doesn't remove parking. It removes the mandate that car dependency be built into every project by law.

Removing a parking minimum isn't anti-car. It's anti-mandate. The market decides what's needed.

A suburban grocery will still build parking after minimums are removed - customers need it. A transit-oriented apartment will build less because residents don't. That calibration to actual demand is what a functioning market does. The mandate prevented it for 70 years.

Local Neighbourhoods Need More Shops and Less Parking - The New Orleans

The Convenience of Proximity Families in the suburbs of Ottawa have been sold a specific kind of convenience for the last several generations. It’s a picture that promises that as long as you have a car in your garage and a parking lot at your destination, the world is your oyster. But anyone who has […]

Dallas is way too hot. The city says less pavement could help cool it down

"[Impervious surfaces] absorb 95% of the solar energy that hits them, raising the temperature around them. The goal is to encourage developers to incorporate more green space and trees, which cools things down on the ground."

Is it ironic that the session on parking minimums is the first one I’ve encountered that is standing room only? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

Tonight is the deadline to submit testimony saying that parking minimums are stupid and unscientific even in more rural places, but they're ESPECIALLY stupid in fucking New York City. https://action.openplans.org/support-lifting-parking-mandates-for-housing-livability-and-climate/?eid=7277

Councils (and residents) always seem to have this great fear that if they don't provide car parking then masses of motorists will just drive to places without any car parking available and then just illegally park on a regular basis.

It's a weird expectation that we don't tend to have for behaviour in other contexts.

Are there real examples of this happening in recent times outside of one off events?

Forward: ...a quote from Miguel Anxo, the mayor of Pontevedra, Spain, which has limited cars from their city center since 1999. Translated from Spanish, "As mayor, I have no obligation to find anyone a space to park their car. For me it's as if you buy a cow and ask me where you should put it or if you buy a freezer and you don't have a place in your house and tell me that you want a hole on the street where you can put it. The cars are the same." #biketooter #bikeadvocate #parkingminimums

While critics worry it could increase the number of cars parked on the street and make parking more difficult to find, proponents say the update to the decades-old parking ordinance would cut down on unused space and help the city grow economically.

Heading to #GoldenValleyHealthClinic on Childs Ave in Merced in a few minutes to meet with a South Merced advocacy group. I was invited at the last city council meeting where I met someone aligned with my views after speaking to the council about the importance of abolishing #ParkingMinimums

One of the topics is going to be how the Merced Bus Service ( #MercedTheBus ) arranges its bus stops.

Turns out, it's a lot easier to network about this stuff when you turn up in person.
