BBC: Market could lose 100 stalls due to Google parking. “North Weald Market, based at the North Weald Airfield in Essex, usually hosts 300 stalls selling clothing, homewares and food every Saturday. Google paid Epping Forest District Council £88.2m for 52 acres (21ha) of land at the former RAF airbase in 2024, and planned to build a car park on some of the market space.”

Protective safe parking programs for the unhoused

When a community is working to tackle problems associated with unaffordable housing and homelessness, it must do so with a multi-pronged approach. As with most things, one size does not fit all, and the same is true for those that are unhoused.

Two previous posts from earlier this week identified the topics of transitional tiny home villages for the unhoused, as well as those metropolitan areas that have made the largest strides in provided such housing. This post addresses the issue of those unhoused residents who chose to live in their car or recreational vehicle instead of a tiny home or other type of shelter. This post does NOT explore these choices themselves, but instead how cities across the nation are trying to provide a smorgasbord of options for the unhoused.

While not as common of an approach as tiny houses or shelters, safe parking zones are an important tool for addressing homelessness. All too often, the unhoused are victimized while on the streets, with even a car providing limited protection. In addition, by providing safe parking zones with facilities, they help improve sanitation and health. Such a program can also help reduce the number of service calls to police by concerned citizens.

Listed below are cities where safe parking zones have been established. Unfortunately, safe parking programs have been axed in several places, particularly in the Denver, Colorado region do to budget cuts, funding challenges, and legal issues.

From an advocacy standpoint, it is frustrating that more local, state, and national leaders do not see the economic benefits of such grassroots programs. Each unhoused person that successfully leaves the streets is another potential renter or homeowner and a taxpaying productive citizen. Multiply that times the number of unhoused people in a community and you have a significant economic boost…easily equivalent to a new employer in town.

The list will be updated as needed. Please feel free to forward any additions, suggestions, or corrections. Once again, nearly all the examples are from the western half of the country.

Peace!
