"Ours is the only lab currently studying this family of kinases in Toxoplasma," Gaji said. Six of these proteins are predicted to be essential for parasite growth, and his team has already shown that at least two control vital processes in the parasite's nucleus.

This represents a treasure trove of drug targets. While other researchers focus on obvious pathways, Gaji has carved out a ...

I love #MiraGrant so much! I think I like her #Parasitology trilogy even better than #Newsflesh, but both are absolutely incredible reads!

@catchingshadows

I’m a big fan of #MiraGrant. I’d heard…not good…things about this one, but I’ve yet to read it for myself. I’ve read and really love her #Newsflesh and #Parasitology trilogies. If you haven’t read those, I highly recommend them!

Cysts of the parasite *Toxoplasma gondii* (which form in the brain and muscles) do not contain a single form of the parasite, as previously thought, but up to five different forms. The subpopulations have different developmental trajectories. This information may facilitate the development of more effective treatments.

A common parasite in the brain is far more active than we thought

A common parasite long thought to lie dormant is actually much more active and complex. Researchers found that Toxoplasma gondii cysts contain multiple parasite subtypes, not just one sleeping form. Some are primed to reactivate and cause disease, which helps explain why infections are so hard to treat. The discovery could reshape efforts to develop drugs that finally eliminate the parasite for good.

ScienceDaily
Toxoplasma gondii #brain cysts, previously believed to contain a single uniform type of dormant #parasite , actually harbor at least five distinct subtypes with specialized roles in survival, spread, and reactivation.

Kleptopredation (Parasitology 🧬)

Kleptopredation is a form of feeding in which a predator eats prey after the prey has hunted, consuming both the prey and its recent meal. It is a specific type of kleptoparasitism. The term was first used in an article published in the journal Biology Letters. Kleptopredation has been observed in nudibranchs, who may target hydroid polyps that have recently eaten zooplankton. In s...
