1000 Day Album Challenge (#3) New Order: Power, Corruption & Lies (03.01.24)
you’ve caught me at a bad time so why don’t you piss off?...
I had been primed for Power, Corruption & Lies by Blue Monday, New Order’s iconic 12-inch single, that preceded the album by a couple of months back in 1983. I feel like this completed their transition to a new sound and identity. rising from the ashes of post punk legends, Joy Division, New Order had emerged as a synthesizer-driven alternative dance band.
I saw New Order perform live in July at the legendary Paradise Garage. It would be about 10 years before I learned that the Paradise Garage is one of the most loved and important clubs in the history of dance music. Larry Levan, the DJ, is one of the most highly regarded and influential DJs ever.
New Order’s first singles and debut album, Movement, passed somewhat below my radar. the single Temptation captured my ears in the summer of 1982. along with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s The Message it was the single of the year. I was now paying attention.
the two side-openers are the songs that struck the deepest for me. Age of Consent (side one) is the more relentless and dance floor oriented of the two. Your Silent Face is the one that seems I can’t live without. its gentle synth lines over a mid-tempo beat seem to hit me where I live.
