Usually, pap smears are performed at a clinic by a doctor or healthcare provider, but with the new kits, patients will have the option of collecting their own sample on site, or taking a kit home, and bringing for testing.

Koskenoja, Harriman, & other local #healthcare providers have been strategizing privately to figure outwhat to do to help people #access everything from #PapSmears to #IUDs. The local #health dept can provide #TitleX #FamilyPlanning services 1½ days a week, but that won't be enough.
There are a few private "providers in town that offer #medication #abortion to their #patients only—very, very quietly," Harriman said. But that won't help patients who don't have good #insurance or are on waitlists.

"Provinces are moving away from pap smears"

"HPV tests are twice as accurate as pap smear testing … while pap smears detect pre-cancerous lesions in about 50 to 55 per cent of cases, HPV tests boast an accuracy rate of about 90 per cent, she added.

'But the new HPV testing is so accurate that when it's negative we feel very, very confident … we can do this every five years and that's going to be enough.' "
