Il visone gigante è stato inserito nella lista delle specie protette dalla Convenzione dell’ONU sulle specie migratorie, aprendo la strada a interventi internazionali per la sua conservazione. Secondo studi recenti, la popolazione di questo animale è diminuita del 50% negli ultimi 25 anni a causa della perdita e frammentazione del suo habitat, nonché per l’inquinamento crescente che compromette la qualità delle acque. La nuova classificazione dovrebbe stimolare la cooperazione tra i paesi per salvaguardare non solo il visone gigante (Pteronura brasiliensis), ma anche gli ecosistemi acquatici dell’Amazzonia e del Pantanal, che rappresentano i suoi principali bastioni.
Nonostante non ci siano più minacce significative legate alla caccia commerciale, il visone gigante si trova ad affrontare sfide importanti. La competizione per le risorse alimentari con le popolazioni locali è un problema costante, poiché gli abitanti delle zone limitrofe cacciano il pesce, di cui il visone è principalmente nutrizionato. Inoltre, il cambiamento climatico sta aggravando le condizioni di vita di questo straordinario animale, con eventi estremi, come siccità e incendi, che colpiscono duramente il suo habitat.
