Pansexuals are similar to Bisexuals in that they are attracted to people of different genders as well as their own. The subtlety is based on the differentiation from the historical definition of Bisexual (meaning two) and Pansexual (meaning all).
Much of this has to do with misconceptions regarding Bisexual acceptance of Transgender and Non-Binary people, though many Bisexuals (myself included) will say there is no difference.
That said, I feel those who choose to be called Pansexual should be accepted as such without issue. Respecting the Pansexual community means honoring the language people use to describe their own hearts. For many, the label "Pansexual" isn't about splitting hairs; it is a vital, intentional way to express that gender is not the gatekeeper of their capacity to love.
It’s like how someone enjoys a bowl of Neapolitan ice cream with its mixed flavors. Some will say Bisexuals love chocolate and vanilla more than strawberry and appreciate the difference in flavors, while Pansexuals love the combined flavors regardless.
I say just enjoy the ice cream.
