Today in Labor History February 9, 1907: Over 3,000 women marched in London for women’s suffrage. Later, people called it the Mud March because of the incessant rain, which left the women splattered in mud. The march came in the wake of several years of direct action, led by Emmeline Pankhurst’s WSPU (AKA the suffragettes). It was the largest suffrage march to date in England and garnered considerable publicity. Emmeline Pankhurst was the mother of Sylvia Pankhurst, a left (council) communist and follower of Anton Pannekoek.

Fortunately for them (technically #suffragettes rather than #suffragists ) current #uk anti-terrorism law was not in force at the time - 1908. Nor was there any question of proscribing #keirhardie because of his association with the #pankhurst family!

#nowplaying #bbcsounds #radio3 I think I heard rightly, in the interval tonight we are promised a short repeat of the a new work #pankhurst #anthem in celebration on #IWD . Stay tuned. #dame_smythe now. a #facing_the_music
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1918, women voted for the first time in a UK general election. Christabel #Pankhurst, daughter of Emmeline, sister of Sylvia, a veteran of the #suffrage movement, narrowly lost her race for a seat in Parliament. And in Ireland, women helped #SinnFéin win.

There’s a lovely #coffee place in #RussellSquare and they have an interesting newsletter too!

The photo of Christabel Pankhurst from 1909 is amazing! For a picture so old it somehow looks amazingly modern.
