En comparación a otros juegos de su género, Animal Well no incluye el combate tradicional y desafía al jugador a usar el ingenio y las físicas del entorno para contactar con los animales, esquivar peligrosos y activar los mecanismos. En un hermoso pero opresivo apartado visual hecho de pixeles y un denso diseño de audio, este juego oculta múltiples capas de acertijos y secretos diseñados para su resolución de manera no lineal y a la manera y ritmo del jugador.
